Challenge #22

The Scene:
A woman stands up and shakes her dress. She dust her hands off and reaches for her bag to get a wipe. She had to clean up before she could go back to the party.

The Rules:

1. What is going on? Where are they? Why are they were they are?

2. You must use 1st person POV.

3. You may introduce any number of characters of any sex... or none.

4. There must be crickets, a fountain of some type, and a clown singing "Send in the clowns." somewhere in the story.

5. You must use the phrase: "What's that smell?"


Think outside the box.

Challenge #21

The Scene:

A room devoid of furniture and painted in odd colors and patterns. A puddle is in one corner. There is an unpleasant smell in the area. A man is writing on a note pad just outside the door. There are flashing lights outside.

The Rules:

1. Who are they? What is going on? Why are they where they are?
2. You decide which POV to use.
3. Your lead  must be male.
4. You must add at least two other characters.
5. There must be violence suggested in some way.
6. You must use the phrase: "Some said they used to have a slaughter house on this site."

Challenge #20

The Scene:

The smell of freshly mown grass filled the air. The woman walked along the path to the gazebo that stood near the river. She carried a book, a pair of reading glasses, and a iced drink. The sounds of the river surrounded her. Wind in the trees, water over stones, birds, bees, and a whippoorwill in the distance. There are lots of trees.

The Rules:

1. Who are they? What is going on? Why are they where they are?
2. You must use 1st person POV
3. You may introduce two more characters of any sex.
4. You must get at least one character wet.
5. You must us the phrase: "Who said practice makes perfect."

The Scene:

A ship in the Caribbean headed for some location. A person stands at the railing staring at the horizon. Their thoughts are in turmoil as they clutch the rail, white knuckled. The sound of a horn startles them. Running feet approach.

The Rules:
 1. Who are they? What is going on? Why are they where they are?

2. You must use 3rd person POV.

3. You can introduce as many characters as you like.

4.
There must be money in the scene, either mentioned or in fact.

5. You must use the phrase: "It is all for nothing!"

Challenge #18

The Scene:

Two men are in the study discussing a problem. There is a knock at the front door. One of the men goes to open the door and at his feet is a small package wrapped in brown paper with his name and address on it. There is no sign of anyone outside.

The Rules:

1. Who are they? What is going one? Why are they where they are?

2. You must use 1st person POV. There can be no other characters aside from the two above.

3. There must be a ticking sound in the room.

4. One character must mention family in reference to what is happening.

5. An uncommon religious item must be introduced.

6. You must use the sentence: "It wasn't supposed to happen like this. Do you have the money?"


Minimum word count: 500

Challenge #17

The Scene:

Midnight. Wind howls through the eaves of the house. Trees sway and creak as rain lashes them, tearing leaves and throwing them to the ground. Lightning streaks across the black sky and thunder shakes the ground and rattles the windows in their frames.

A woman stares into the night through an upstairs window. Something streaks across the lawn. A sound of glass breaking is heard downstairs.

The Rules:
  1. What is going on? Where are they? Why are they where they are?
  2. You must use 3rd person POV.
  3. You do not have to introduce any other characters but if you do, it must be a male.
  4. You must use the word gossamer.
  5. You must have a candelabra in the scene.
  6. You should strive for 1000 words.

Challenge #16

The Scene:

Two men are sitting across the room, at a table in a busy restaurant where a woman is having lunch. They are wearing sunglasses and drinking a strange green drink. They appear to be watching someone.

The Rules:

  1. Who are they? What is going on? Why are they where they are?
  2. You must use 1st person POV. You select the POV character.
  3. You must mention the Gulf oil spill.
  4. There must be a dog in the scene.
  5. You must use the phrase: "I'm not cleaning that up!"



Challenge #15

The Scene:

A man is camping in the woods. He is seated near a camp fire. A strange sound in the forest draws his attention.

The Rules:

1. Who are they? What is going one? Why are they where they are?

2. Use 1st person POV. You decide if you introduce other characters and what sex.

3. There must be a cell phone that doesn't work.

4. There must be a flat tire.

5. You must use a can of pepper spray.

7. Someone must say: "Your timing is impeccable!"

Bonus Dare: Write this scene in two ways with two different outcomes!


Challenge #14

The Scene:

2. You may have several characters in the scene but there must be two males directly involved with the POV and one of them must not be able to speak.

3. There must be something green.

4. There must be a violent reaction to a smell.

5. You must use the phrase: "I don't want to know where you found that."

6. The goal is 1000 words.



Remember, overlook the obvious. Think of different ways the rules could apply.

The Scene:

Sunrise over water. A man stands and gazes out at sea. His vision blurs and he swipes at his eyes.

Someone approaches.

The Rules:

1. Who are they? What is going on? Why are they where they are?

2. You must use 3rd person POV. (See note or sidebar)

3. You must introduce one more character of any sex. There can be peripheral characters but they must not interact.

4. There must be a some horrible memory.

5. There must be a wrench in the scene.

6. You must use the phrase: "No one will ever know."

The Scene:

Six gold coins lie on the edge of a fountain. A slender woman with black hair stands near a statue and weeps. A man is in the plaza with a sword.

The Rules:

  1. Who are they? What is going on? Why are they where they are?

  2. You must use 1st person POV.

  3. The characters must be in some country other than your own.

  4. You must introduce at least two other characters who are relatives of your POV.

  5. Someone must be angry with the baker.

  6. A drunk interferes.

  7. You must use the phrase: "That is an impossible amount!"

Challenge #11

The Scene:

It is late night. A woman is sitting in bed watching television. A dog barks. There is a sound of a piece of furniture moving. There are paintings on red walls. A man steps into the bedroom.

The Rules:

  1. Who are they? What is going on? Why are they where they are?

  2. You must use 3rd person POV.

  3. Your POV character must be angry.

  4. There must be a hammer in the scene.

  5. You must identify one painting by Caravaggio.

  6. Someone must cry in the scene.

  7. You must use the phrase: "Have you lost your mind?"

Challenge #9

The Scene:

A man with a back pack hikes a narrow path along the side of a mountain. The path is precarious in places and there are rock falls as well as lookout points. It is a well worn path. Far below is a small village or town. Darkness is approaching. A dog walks ahead of him. He hears a noise and looks back.


The Rules:

1.You must use 1st person POV. The POV character must be the person in the above scene.

4. You must introduce at least one character and no more than three. One must be a male.

5. There is an axe in this scene and a some type of fire.

6. Someone must mention a scientific experiment. You can google "famous scientific experiments" for help.

7. You must use the phrase: "It is a short trip to town from here."

The Scene:

A warm sunny day with blue skies and puffy clouds at 9:00 a.m..
A man is walking along a trail in a state park with a backpack.
In the distance there is a sound of laughing and talking at a lake where campers and park visitors can swim.

The Rules:

1. Introduce as many characters as you like and of any sex or none.

2. A geological event must be mentioned at some point in the scene.


3. On the trail
are polished stones, a small carved box, and a third item - mineral, vegetable, or human?

4. Word count is unlimited.

5. You must use the phrase: "I know her!"

The Scene:

A woman is seated at a desk in a room surrounded by certain items. Someone is watching her. Someone is afraid.  In the distance there is the sound of a large door closing. A horn is heard. There is the sound of wind chimes nearby. There is a strange smell coming from somewhere.

The Rules:

1. You must introduce two characters of any sex.

2. You must use third person POV. 


3. The location must be exotic and must not be common.

4. There must be a mysterious object on the desk owned by an unknown person.


5. You must use the phrase: "What did you do with it?"

Don't do banal. Make unusual assumptions. Stretch this one to 1500 words.

The Scene:

It is winter. A woman in an long coat and boots strolls along a lane. A man approaches from the opposite direction. There are trees all around. Bells are ringing in the distance. Children are laughing. There is a smell of wood smoke.

The Rules:


1.You must use 1st person POV. You chose which character is POV character.

2.You can't introduce any other character. Other characters can be seen by POV character but must not interact.

3.There must be an object that glitters in the light.

4.It must be early morning or late evening.

5.You must use the phrase: "I've waited too long."

Overlook the obvious. All may not be as it seems.

The Scene:

A woman is changing a tire on the side of a road. Another car stops behind her and a man sticks his head out. There is a house nearby but not visible. Someone is hanging clothes on a line.

The Rules:

1.You choose POV character and you must use 3rd person POV.

2.You may introduce two other characters and at least one must be a woman.

3.You must use the color red.

4.Someone must be wearing work boots.

7.You must use the following phrase: "I knew I'd find you."

8.You must have at least 1000 words.

Challenge #4

The Scene:

Church bells are ringing in the distance. A man and woman are walking along a sidewalk in a residential neighborhood. There are large green boxes in some yards. A yellow tape is around one property.

The Rules:


1. You must use 1st person POV with one of the above characters.
 
2. You must introduce a third character – male or female – with purple hair.
 
3. You must use the statement: “It isn't over, you know.”
 
4. You must utilize a jump rope.

5. You need minimum 500
words.

Challenge #3

The Scene:

A woman is lying across a queen-sized bed, a man is standing nearby, in front of an open window, a dog can be heard barking.

The Rules:

1.You may introduce one additional character.
2.You must use first person POV. You may choose which character is your POV character but you must make that person a dwarf.
3.Your new character must offer something to the man.
4.Someone must tell a secret.
5.There must be a gun in the scene.
6.The phone must ring.
7.You will need at least 1000 words for this.


As always, things are not what they seem. Let your mind connect the dots.

Challenge #2

The Scene:


A boy, a dog, and a man in a yellow suit are standing in the middle of a field surrounded by some structures. The man is angry, the dog is lying down and the boy is frightened.
 

The Rules:

1.You must use third person point of view from the perspective of a third person you bring into the scene. You may bring in a male or a female. 

2.They must be carrying a large bag containing a useful object.


3.There must be implied violence in the scene that is resolved by the end.


4.You must use the phrase: “I didn't know it would do that.”


5.You must have at least 750 words.


Again, things may not be as they seem. Presume nothing. Let your mind make the connections!

Challenge #1

The Scene:
Three men are sitting at a bar in a seedy, rundown room. One is wearing a black trench coat. The second is wearing a pair of overalls. The third is wearing a uniform. You must address these three items: Where are they, what is going on and why are where they are?

The Rules:
 
1. You must use 1st person point of view.
 

2. You may use one of the three characters as your POV character but no character already in the room other than the three can be used for POV. Other people can be there and interact but not as the POV Character.
3. You can bring in a fourth character from the outside and use that as your POV if you like but if you do it must be a woman and she must be in need of help in some way, trivial or otherwise.
4. At some point the following phrase must be used: "You want ice for that?"

You need at least 500 hundred words to do this justice. I'm betting you get more.
